The woman at the next table to me at the dumpling place mentioned to her eating companion that she wrote a book called Beatlemania. A look at Amazon does not disvulge her name, but I would like to mention that it literally made me nauseated for a good minute. I can't stand them--although to be fair, it's not the Beatles I hate so much as how people venerate them out of all relation to reality. Their influence is grossly overstated; their music sucks entirely like virtually all music of that era; any legacy they have nowadays is of things to be embarrassed about, not proud of. Yet saying these things to most people is enough for them to dismiss you as crazy, because of course: I mean, it's The BEATLES.

Thank you -- this exactly captures my own feelings about this quartet of boomer saints. I routinely tell people that I hate the Beatles and do not bother trying to explain my distaste (there's no point in trying to argue someone out of what is essentially a religious faith), and reactions are usually dismissive, as you described. On one occasion, however, a woman began making out with me in a bar while a Beatles song played in order to, as she put it, build up some positive associations with the band. (In hindsight, it did not achieve that goal.)
